Jonatan De Winne, spin artist from Belgium

Yeah nice art, but: who are you?

As you’ve read earlier, my name is Jonatan and I introduce myself as a Belgium based artist. This can be slightly misleading as I am not only defined by that word, on the contrary. I have quite a practical mindset which partly originates from what I have studied in the past. I hold a Masters degree in industrial engineering and Masters degree in environmental management. This resulted from an education where the most important thing was to get good grades in school. Creativity has never been a part of my life and it has definitely never been something I know I wanted to pursue. Of course I liked pieces of art, going from more classical paintings to high fashion clothes one would never wear in the streets. But as you all know, there is a thick line between liking something and creating something yourself. I mean I also love watching Red Bull athletes perform the most life threatening stunts, but I wouldn’t even dare think of doing them myself.

As I grew older, I started to explore the most precious thing one possesses: my mind. This I have done mainly by a quote that I have known for most of my life. It’s one from Frank Tibolt, which I hung in my room when I was still a teenager starting to discover life:

“We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action.”

As someone who thinks about everything in a pragmatic way, I absolutely LOVE using this quote in letting paint flow. The beauty in my works relies in the fact that I don’t waste a lot of time thinking about what I want to do. I shortly think about the colors I want to use and I tend to start right away. I have an idea about how I would love the paint to end up on the canvas, but most of the time I am happily surprised about how the centrifugal forces have decided differently. Beauty lies in the unexpected, just as Bilbo Baggins runs off into his unexpected adventure.

If you want to know more about me, my art or how I try to live, be sure to check out my weekly sunday scribbles in the blog section. I can’t promise they will be of a highly sophisticated level, but hey, I won’t lie about who I am. Life is too precious to do so.
